Wicked for the Weekend (Keene, Carolyn. Nancy Drew Files, 123.)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (October, 1997)
Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

Farewell sweet Ned !!!
This is the last of the Files books (and the Nancy Drew books of any description) where Ned makes a difference in nancy's life. They go away for the weekend on a Fraternity Mystery Weekend, and have to unravel the mystery before the weekend is over. Anyway, just a little bit sentimental, as the books in the "On Campus" series took such a sleezy turn after 60 years :(

Wrong Track (Nancy Drew Files, No 64)

The Wrong Track is an awesome book!
This book is really good. It differs from the other Nancy Drew stories. In most Nancy Drew mysteries, it is clear who the "bad guy" is, but the mystery itself takes other forms. In The Wrong Track, it's Nancy Drew's job to find out who the theif is, not just track them down. In a way, I like the other Nancy Drew mysteries better, but this is still a great read and I reccomend it.

The Secret of the Old Clock (Her Nancy Drew Mystery Stories)
Published in Hardcover by Platt & Munk (June, 1959)
Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

It all Started Here
Nancy Drew is heading home when she witnesses a little girl almost get hit by a truck. This chance meeting with Judy and her aunts leads Nancy into her first mystery. The aunts were counting on inheriting money from their cousin Josiah Crowley. But other relatives have produced a will that leaves everything to them. When Nancy begins to realize the plight of everyone left out of the will, she feels she must investigate. But where might the real will be hidden?

I read many of Nancy's mysteries while growing up, but I realized I'd never read this one before. The story seemed a little more straight forward then I remember others being, but it might just be me. Still, Nancy tackles the case with her usual enthusiasm. I was most surprised to discover the Bess and George weren't present for this first adventure. Frankly, I missed them.

I simply must share the line that drew lots of laughs from me. A villain is confronting Nancy and says, "This will be the last time you'll ever stick your nose in business that doesn't concern you!" If you only knew, fella....

Nancy may not represent the best literature available, but she's fun escapism that everyone needs. Over 70 years old, she's proved her staying power. This is the perfect series to make life long mystery lovers out of kids. Sure worked for me.

The Secret Of The Old Clock
This book is great! It is about Nancy Drew and how she has to find a will that a man named Josiah Crowley may have made. But Ada and Isabel, the people who would get the will if no one found a later one,are no help! They hope there isnt a later will. Ada and Isabel are rich, and the people the later will is going to go to are poor. Nancy Drew has to find out the mystery. She has to find a blue notebook which tells of where the will is! Josiah Crowley is a very smart man and has great hiding places! The time is running out! The will is going to go to the mean twin sisters who dont even need it, Ada and Isabel! If you read this great story, you will find out if she finds it!!

The Secret of the Old Clock
This story is about a 18-year-old girl named Nancy Drew who likes to solve mysteries. She usually solves her mysteries with her two best friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne.

In this book, Nancy is trying to look for a will that's hidden on a old clock because the person who wrote the will died and the will cannot be on the this certain relative of his' hands or else he will destroy it for some weird reason. To solve this mystery, Nancy had been kidnapped from a number of robbers and had to travel with them to get the clock back. After Nancy solved the mystery, she was rewardeda heirloom from Alison and Grace, relatives of the person who died.

The Mystery at Lilac Inn (Her Nancy Drew Mystery Stories)
Published in Hardcover by Platt & Munk (June, 1961)
Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

Both Editions Are Great
This review concerns both the original 1930 edition and the revised 1961 edition, which is the one commonly found in new book stores. Both editions involve the theft of valuable jewels which belong to Nancy's friend Emily from a place called Lilac Inn; however, that is pretty much where similarity between the two books ends. In the original edition, Lilac Inn is a restaurant where Emily's guardian, Mrs. Willoughby, goes to have lunch while in possession of Emily's jewels. After the jewels are stolen from Mrs. Willoughby, the police begin to suspect that she was involved in the theft. Nancy and Emily believe in Mrs. Willoughby's innocence and Nancy sets out to find the real thief. With the revised edition, Lilac Inn is an inn owned by Emily and her fiance. The jewels are stolen during a dinner party where Mrs. Willoughby (who is Emily's aunt in this edition) was going to present Emily with the jewels. Also Nancy has a look-a-like who is going around town causing all sorts of trouble. Both editions are excellent books and because they are both distinct stories, you could read them both and not feel like you know exactly how the second one will turn out. Both books had plenty of action and had good endings. Personally, I prefered the original, but they are both interesting books. Read them both if you can, you won't be disappointed with either one.

Great
I really enjoyed reading this one, though it isn't my favorite. Still, all the Nancy Drew books are great, and no matter what you ALWAYS wind up getting pulled into them. I suggest this one greatly.

Black Beauty (Nancy Drew's Favorite Classics)
Published in Hardcover by Price Stern Sloan Pub (March, 1978)
Author: Anna Sewell
Average review score:

Great young teenage book
Anna Sewell's novel Black Beauty is a timeless classic for readers of all ages, but has a main demographic of females from the age 9 to 16.
The story takes place in 19th century England. IT follows the life and experience of a horse named Black Beauty. The horse is born on a farm and sold at the age of four. His first owner Squire Gordon is a great loving man. Black Beauty is treated with respect and dignity. The story follows the horse as he is then sold from owner to owner. He becomes neglected and abused by carriage owners. A loving and gentle man finally purchases Black Beauty. He cares about the horses and treats them well. Black Beauty is finally happy as a carriage horse when tragedy strikes. His owner is struck with illness and is forced to sell the horse. Black Beauty is sold to a poor owner and is neglected. He longs to go back home to squire Gordon's farm and live a happy life once again.

The book is uniquely enough from the horse's point of view. This helps children connect with the horse, and makes the book more interesting and easy to follow along with. The heart breaking tale of a horse's life that will readers leave on the edge of their seat wanting to keep reading, dying to find out what happens next. The book goes into detail about how animal abuse used to be in the early 1900's. Older children have and will continue to enjoy this book for generations to come.

Black Beauty has became a Timeless Classic
"Black Beauty," written by author Anna Sewell, is one of the most famous horse books during the nineteenth century. Part of its achievement consists that the novel is a classic for people with many different characteristics. First published in 1877, "Black Beauty" continues to enjoy people for new generations of American citizens around the world. Anna Sewell's brilliant account of animal treatment became a historic breakthrough because it was the first book that described a horse's experience in England. "An autobiography of a young stallion," this book follows the life of Black Beauty. Throughout the novel, it is told in a creative first person form, as if Beauty was describing and narrating his life. Ms. Sewell chose to write this book from the "horses point of view," and she remarkably was able to succeed with her novel. Since Sewell intended on writing this novel in Beauty's point of view, the reader begins to understand the impact of good and treatment towards the horse and his loyal friends. Starter of the Humane Society, the author truly captivates readers with this autobiography of a beautiful, friendly, loving black stallion. In a letter to her friend, Sewell expresses that she hopes "Black Beauty will induce kindness, sympathy, and understanding treatment towards horses." From Beauty's happy, enjoyable youth to his pleasant retirement, Anna Sewell ingeniously wrote the book to remind the cruel treatment in the 1800's. Most importantly, Sewell wrote the book in a time where horses were not given the same respect today, and "Black Beauty" helped to open the eyes of many to the cruelty horses had to suffer. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of the society in London, England, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.

A BEAUTIFUL BOOK....
Since pictures & illustrations are as much a part of a child's imagination as the written word, then this book beautifully combines both, with the abundant B&W line illustrations by illustrator Lucy Kemp-Welch, in addition to the 12 colour plates included - all in keeping with the time period this novel is set in. A wonderful edition to any child's library. I've been reading horse-topic related books for as long as I can remember; but the very 1st horse story that left an indelible impression on me was ANNA SEWELL's " BLACK BEAUTY ".

It really openend my eyes as to the abuse and cruelty - and majestic fraility - that these wonderful creatures suffer at the hands of their human counterparts.

Ms Sewell opted to write this book from " the horse's point of view " and she was one of the very few authors that was able to pull this off with such great success.

This book also, laid the cornerstone for the ASPCA aims and goals, and brought to light the conditions and treatment of working horses in 20th century London, England ( and elsewhere ).

The story is such a wonderful tale of a horse's life from start to finish; told with a quiet dignity and warmth - and serves as a successful analogy also, as to how humans should interact with one another.

This book also laid the cornerstone for my interest and love of horses, and further spurred my interest in reading about all things Equine.

From there, and I went on to read all of Walter Farley's "The Black Stallion" series ( I used to collect the hardcover editions), and Marguerite Henry's books, and National Velvet(which really wasn't about a horse per se, but more about a little girl who's dreams come true), and anything else I could get my horsey-hungry hands on!

I now keep a copy of Anna Sewell's "Black Beauty" in my library at home, and have given a copy to my daughter to read.

This is a tale that sensitizes the reader to the plight of horses at the hands of their human caregivers, trainers, etc - all told from the horse's mouth ( so to speak )..!

And lest we think that the inhumane treatment of horses has abided since this book was written - one only has to follow the controversy surrounding the use of "Premarin", or abusive training methods of gaited horses, or the Thoroughbred racing industry, or rodeo...etc.

There is still much to be gleaned about the exploitation and abuse of animals from this book - which will always remain a timeless classic.

The Dr. Drew and Adam Book: A Survival Guide To Life and Love
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (13 October, 1998)
Authors: Drew Pinsky, Marshall Fine, and Adam Carolla
Average review score:

Common sense from two "real" guys who have heard it all...
I listen to Dr. Drew and Adam's radio show all the time. Every now and then, as they are dealing with a caller's problem, they make a point or impart some common sense that makes me think, "YES! They're exactly right. I wish EVERYBODY could have heard that last piece of advice!"

The Dr. Drew and Adam Book is a comprehensive collection of all those priceless nuggets of advice that I wish EVERYBODY could hear. Therefore, I think EVERYBODY should buy this book. It's content is served up in the "Complete Idiot's Guide To..." style, so even a fourteen year old with Attention-Deficit Disorder won't be able to put it down. There's lots of interesting sidebars, input from celebrities who have been guests on their show, etc.

This book is like Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus... only it's funnier, shorter, more practical, more hip, is about more than just relationships, and just better. The government should buy this book by the millions and make it required reading for all high school freshmen. Adults (especially parents) will love it, too. And it's cheap!

A guidebook to life--enlightening and entertaining.
This book is as close as you will find to a handbook for modern life. Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla answer questions about relationships, sex, drugs, mental health and life in general in an entertaining, insightful way. The book is written clearly and organized by topic which makes it an easy read and a useful reference.

Dr. Drew and Adam are an unlikely pair who share an original chemistry. Dr. Drew, a board-certified physician and addiction medicine specialist, provides easy-to-understand, authoritative information on a variety of topics critical to every human. Adam Carolla, a radio personality, comedian, actor and former construction worker, provides the wit, charm and humor that make even the hard answers easy to swallow.

Learn what Adam believes a cat can teach men about handling women. Hear Dr. Drew separate the myths from the truths about sexuality. Read Adam's rules about who should be banned from having sex. Listen to Dr. Drew's advice on abuse, drug use, STDs and many, many more topics.

This is a great book for parents to use to initiate discussions with their kids about these difficult topics. If you can't bring yourself to talk to your kid, at least let Dr. Drew and Adam do it. They bring a sense of moral conscience and responsibility back to relationships.

Wow
The greatest book i ever read but because im poor i could never buy it. Please, i am using this computer at the library. I saw the book at the bookstore and loved it. Please have pity on a poor boy. Wicca for Men: A Handbook for Male Pagans Seeking a Spiritual Path
Published in Paperback by Carol Pub Group (November, 1998)
Author: A. J. Drew
Average review score:

Deceptive Title for an Average Book on Basic Wicca
As a book of basic information on Wicca and on the specific tradition of Creations Covenant this is a fairly average book. It gives a solid overview of principles of magick and Wiccan beliefs. The specific information about the particular beliefs of the Creations Covenant tradition set it a little apart. This can be important to anyone interested in exploring the tradition.

There a some fresh outlooks and variations on ritual that I am glad to have been presented here. I have no regrets for having bought and read this book. I might even suggest it to people looking for information on the basics of Wicca. But there are many other basic books on Wicca some of which are better written many are more comprehensive.

I was nagged through out by one question, though. What sets this apart as a "Handbook for Male Pagans". The answer kept coming back to me, "Absolutely nothing!" There is no special perspective for men here. And despite Mr. Drew's comment there is nothing unique about the idea presented of a balanced Male/Female view of the divine. I hoped to find philosophical and mythological information to bring new insights from a male perspective and explore how Wicca can open horizons or some such. I hoped to find rituals and meditations to specifically enrich the male experience of our craft. None of this is here. I think that with a more fitting title I could rate this book more highly. But as it is I just find myself wondering why the author never got around to the topic his title promises.

Introductory leval Excellance!
If this was the first book I had ever read on Wicca, my entrance into the community would have been so much easier. The author's laid back approach is excellent at making the reader relax about a touchy subject.

If you are a stuffed shirt, you might not like this one. But if you are interested in an Earth Based religion and aren't afraid of a little mud between your toes, you'll love it.

This is the first book I have seen that offers a playful approach to God and Goddess. Written from a male viewpoint, the relationship between men and both God and Goddess are explained in a way that never really sunk in before. I loved it.

Oh, by the way.... Gardnerians should probably NOT read this book.

An excellent book for beginners - and a fresh viewpoint...
I recommend this book to men (AND women) that are curious about Wicca and would like a good general background on the Craft - especially those who are attracted to Pagan ideas and concepts but are put off by the sometimes overly female-oriented direction of many books on Wicca (an understandable reaction to Patriarchal Monotheism, but...). Wicca is an old (perhaps the oldest) religion, re-emerging in the modern day. It is growing explosively - and is evolving at the same time...it is good to see a viewpoint mature enough to realize that Goddess and God are equal sides of Creation - and brave enough to say so in public! This book fills a true need within our community.

I wish this book had existed fifteen years ago, when I first encountered modern Wicca - it would have been of great assistance to me then. I think it is a great read for all beginning - or considering - the Wiccan path...male AND female. And for anyone in or out of the Craft that has an interest in being exposed to a fresh and insightful viewpoint on contemporary Wicca and one of the directions in which it is heading. I may not agree with everything Mr. Drew says, but I am glad to have read his book...it made me think, it made me laugh....and it reminded me WHY I chose this Path.

Blessed Be and Live Free!
